![]() ![]() Spacebase Startopia is an enthusiastic homage to one of my favourite management games. ![]() It does make me appreciate the time I don’t spend up to my elbows in grime a lot more, at least. I’ve probably spent more time performing this dismal task than any other single thing in Spacebase Startopia, which is pretty depressing. Picking up litter was not fun in the original Startopia, and it’s so, so much worse in its spiritual successor. To stay on top of it, you’ll need to give your droids a hand, manually picking it up and depositing it yourself, as well as squashing any of the critters all that filth attracts. Dealing with all the rubbish that the station’s denizens generate is a monumental task that you will never really complete until you just give up. In addition to the extensive single player Campaign, an individually configurable sandbox mode as well as both a competitive and a cooperative multiplayer mode for up to four players awaits you.īefore you get too excited about recycling, however, I should add that Spacebase Startopia will make you start twitching as soon as you see some litter out in the real world. The dynamic narrator AI “VAL” reacts to your decisions and is always at your side in both word and deed – and the occasional extremely unqualified comment.Sabotage your opponents’ economy or attack them with your Mech Units, conduct trade and beware of Space Pirates eager to board your Station. Prevail against your competitors, for you are not alone on the Space Station. Each of the three Decks will require your leadership skills, with the Sub Deck containing all of the Rooms vital to survival, while the Fun Deck focuses on your visitors and the flora and fauna found on the Bio Deck provides sufficient Resources for survival as well as a home to the graceful Dryads. The 10-mission, fully dubbed single-player Campaign will require all your skills as Commander of the Spacebase Startopia as you strive to create one of the most attractive trade and tourism destinations in the known universe. But it’s organised chaos everyone is working or fulfilling their many needs and vices, each an important link in a sprawling chain that keeps the music pumping in the disco and the factory churning out new blueprints. FEATURE LISTĪt first glance, Spacebase Startopia looks like pure chaos, with hordes of aliens and robots rushing between rooms heaving with visitors. It houses the berth, medical centre, all your industry and security buildings, research-basically a smorgasbord of essential stuff. ![]() At the bottom, you’ve got the main deck, where you’ll be spending most of your time. Every station is split up into sections, separated by bulkheads that can be opened for a fee, and three specialised decks. Once you’ve got a few toys to play with, the three-level system also proves to be a boon. Spacebase Startopia isn’t an especially challenging management game, but it can be demanding, dragging you all across the station to make trade deals, oversee research projects and make sure all your facilities are fully staffed. This makes some of the earlier missions extremely dull, but later on you’ll be thankful you weren’t thrown into the deep end. Regardless of your focus, you’ll probably still use everything at your disposal, but the campaign eases you in by slowly unlocking the full list of construction projects, making you wait until you get near the end before you have absolutely everything. And as if maintaining the three Space Station Decks, entertaining the eight Alien races and defending against enemy invaders were not enough of a challenge, the dynamic narrator AI is not going to mince matters and commentates the events in a lovely but sharp-tongued manner. In addition to the challenging single player Campaign and the versatile battle mode, there are also competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes for up to four players. ![]() Spacebase Startopia captivates with its original mixture of economic simulation and empire building strategy paired with classic RTS skirmishes and a good dose of humor. Oh, and before I forget – it’s probably just a bug in my security protocols anyway – but my sensors are showing just loads of enemy creatures in all of the other Sectors… So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get to work! Let us join forces to conquer space.” Amongst others, there’s the development of further Sectors, maintenance of the three vital Main Decks as well as the customer acquisition and entertainment of our extraterrestrial visitors, who provide us with sufficient Energy for our plans for global improvement.
